Spaghetti Western

A smoky and moody Mezcal cocktail, that I call the Spaghetti Western.

Have you started loving Mezcal yet because I have! You may have tried a Mezcal Margarita but this spirit can do so much more.

Mezcal is like Tequila’s dark and broody cousin. The one out smoking on the porch that talks you into hopping on the back of his motorcycle.

Technically, all Tequila is Mezcal. But not all Mezcal is Tequila. Confused? Let me break it down:

Mezcal is a spirit made from the agave plant. As most people know, Tequila is also made from agave but it must be the blue agave. So only one type of agave can be used to make Tequila.

While Mezcal can be made from many different types of agave, Tequila can only be made from blue agave.

Mezcal is also typically made by roasting the plant in underground pits which gives it that smoky taste. Tequila is typically steamed in ovens.

That is Mezcal and Tequila in a nutshell. There is so much more to the rich history of these spirits and if like to nerd out on that kind of stuff give it a Google.

If you are new to Mezcal, I recommend doing a little research on a quality bottle available to you and picking one up.

The best way to get to know a new spirit is always to sip it straight. Mezcal can be a little surprising at first. It is smoky right from the start but there is so much more going on. I find it as complex as whiskey or wine. Peppery, mineral-ly, earthy… there are as many words to describe it as there are types of Mezcal. They vary greatly so spend some time finding your favorite.

I knew I wanted to do something different with Mezcal and not just make a Margarita. Although, a Mezcal Margarita is fantastic and you should definitely try one. I just knew this spirit could really shine when it’s smoky, complex qualities were highlighted. I originally thought I was going for something like an Old Fashioned with Mezcal. The Spaghetti Western

The Spaghetti Western calls for some low lighting and deep conversation. It would be a great before or after dinner drink somewhere vibey.

To mix this up, start with whatever you like to stir up a cocktail in. You can use a cocktail shaker or a canning jar but for this type of mixing I prefer a cocktail mixing glass, and I like to stir it with a long bar spoon.

Then, add some ice and start with your favorite Mezcal. There’s only one way to find your favorite… You have to try them all!

Add some sweet Vermouth and agave syrup and a few shakes of bitters. I love the Smoked Chili Bitters from Hella. Give this a stir—no shaking for this one—and strain into an up glass of your choice.

Finally, squeeze a wide or flamed twist over top and drop in.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz. Mezcal

  • 1 oz. Sweet Vermouth

  • ¼ oz. Agave

  • 3-6 shakes smoked chili bitters

  • Orange twist

Directions

  • Add ice and ingredients into a cocktail pitcher.
  • Stir for several seconds.
  • Strain into an up glass.
  • Garnish with a wide or flamed orange twist.
