Spicy Margarita – A Sweet Heat

It’s time to turn up the sweet heat on the classic Margarita, and this Spicy Margarita will do the job.

There are 2 ways to achieve the spice for this version:

Make some Jalapeño Infused Tequila. Depending on your jalapeños’ strength, this can be ready in as little as 24 hours. So you can easily make some now for tomorrow or the weekend
Simply muddle some jalapeno slices in your shaker of glass with your regular tequila.

A note about tequila: Make sure it is 100% agave!

Spicy margarita ingredients.

Why 100% agave?

If it does not say 100% agave on the bottle, it only needs to contain 51% of the pure blue agave that tequila is made from.

The other 49% is made from cane sugar and can have yucky additives like caramel coloring and glycerin. No way, Jose. Ever had a tequila hangover? This is why. (Or maybe you just drank too much.) Either way, these “mixto” tequilas, as they are known, should go straight in the garbage. So make sure you are getting tequila as God intended.

Time for the Spicy Margarita

After making your tequila nice and spicy, either by muddling or infusing, put into a shaker filled halfway with ice and add orange liqueur, lime juice, orange juice, and agave to the shaker and shake to froth.

Shaking makes most cocktails so much better but especially a margarita. It adds a lightness and mouthfeel you can’t get any other way.

A word about lime juice: Freshly squeezed limes are the only way to go. You can’t be lazy when you are making a great margarita. And that makes it more special, right? You can be a little lazier with an automatic juicer, though.

Be sure to choose smooth-skinned limes for maximum juiciness. Make your hard work pay off.

For extra flavor and presentation points, rim the glass.

I love to use Tajín for this. It is a spicy, limey, salty seasoning you can find anywhere. I scored this excellent Tajín container at my local grocery store. Wet the glass rim with a lime wedge and dip it into the seasoning.

Strain from the shaker into your rimmed glass filled with fresh ice. Garnish with a lime slice and slice of pepper.

And there you have it. Kick up the heat on a classic, and your tastebuds and metabolism will thank you!
